As J. French banjos are not marked with a serial number, putting extant instruments in any sort of order is difficult. The organization of the instruments below was arrived at by evaluating the design and construction features of each one, and using that data to place them in what is believed to be a rough chronological order. However, much of the order is based on guesses, and it should not be taken as any sort of definitive organization.
